Nationalmuseum celebrates 300 years of Rörstrand at Läckö Castle this summer

In co-operation with the Läckö Castle Foundation, the National Museum Rörstrand 300 years - treasures from the Nationalmuseum collections this summer. The exhibition opens at Läckö Castle on 13 June and is a colourful and shapely journey through the history of Swedish ceramics.

Sweden's oldest porcelain factory, Rörstrand, started in Stockholm in 1726, moved to Gothenburg in 1926 and then to Lidköping in the 1930s. Rörstrand is an important part of Swedish design history. The exhibition shows a glimpse into a fantastic history that ended in 2005 when production was discontinued at the factory in Lidköping.

In the 18th century, the production of earthenware was part of the state's desire to develop the nation's economy and avoid expensive imports. Tax rules and other privileges provided the economic conditions. The exhibition features faience objects from this period. They radiate liveliness and joy, reflecting the period's desire for form. The colour palette used by decorative painters was rich and seduced the market for most of the 18th century.

With the unique artefacts collected by the National Museum since 1885, examples are also given of the 19th and 20th centuries' ambitions to reach a larger market through various exhibitions. Works signed by Rörstrand's popular designers of the 20th and 21st centuries are also on display. These include artists such as Alf Wallander, Gunnar Nylund, Isaac Grünewald, Marianne Westman, Inger Persson, Signe Persson-Melin, Pia Törnell and Jonas Bohlin.

The exhibition is an exploration of famous and lesser-known designers, with some artefacts on display for the first time since they were acquired.

The exhibition Rörstrand 300 years - treasures from the Nationalmuseum collections will be shown at Läckö Castle 13 June - 13 September 2026.

Läckö Castle in focus in the podcast People's history - two episodes to be released in May

19/5-2025

At the end of May, the popular podcast People's history two stops at Läckö Castle. Premiering on 21 May, listeners will join host Anders Lundin on a historical journey through one of Sweden's most fascinating castles. The second episode will be released on 28 May and takes the listener into everyday life at the castle during the 17th century and highlights what Magnus Gabriel De la Gardie has meant to the city of Lidköping.

"A fantastic castle with so much to tell - the story of Läckö Castle stretches from the Middle Ages to the cultural and historical monument it is today," says Anders Lundin. "We make two eventful stops on our historical journey where we get to see the rise of the nobility but also its dramatic fall."

Folkets historia is one of Sweden's most popular history podcasts. Through newly written dramatisations, dreamy soundscapes and conversations with knowledgeable guests, our history is portrayed from a new and human perspective - always with people at the centre.

The sections are a collaboration between Sparbanken Lidköping, Destination Läckö-Kinnekulle and Läckö Castle Foundation.

Läckö Castle is one of Sweden's most beautiful castles, and can tell the story of the time from the 13th century to today. Together with the podcast Folkets historia, history comes alive and we show Läckö and Lidköping to a new target group, which we think is both fun and exciting," says Jan Malmgren at the Läckö Castle Foundation.

"Through the People's History podcast, we see an opportunity to highlight Lidköping in a new forum for us. We believe that this can help to strengthen the brand of the place, where history plays a central role," says Anna Ohlin Ek, Destination Läckö-Kinnekulle.
