Medieval days at Läckö Castle

Experience the Middle Ages at Läckö Castle on 20-21 June - castle adventure, fencing and market. A warm welcome to Medieval Days at Läckö Castle!

For two days, we offer a packed programme for young and old with a medieval theme. In addition to the annual medieval market, we will be visited by Condottieri, Hörsägen and Kristin Fornfela, who will enhance our programme with medieval music, historical fairy tales, fencing school and much more. We also offer a unique guided tour of the medieval history of the castle. Put on your moccasins, trunks and straw hats and let yourself be transported to another time. 

Briefly about our guest artists:

Hearsay - With speed, humour and historical knowledge, Hörsägen entertains with historical tales, legends and myths. They teach historical board games, and give lectures on history. Let yourself be transported to another time by Sweden's best storytellers. 

Condottieri - Condottieri Stagefighting is a historical martial arts organisation from Götene that entertains and trains in shiny steel. They have appeared at Läckö Castle on several occasions when there has been a need for sword fighting. It's that time again! They will hold a demonstration of combat in armour and a fencing school for children. 

Fornfela - Kristin Svensson is a fiddler and singer with roots in the West Gothic soil. With lively and cheerful playing, she meets the audience with historical instruments and old songs.

Activities during the days

10.15 and 16.00 - The hunt for the necklace (5+ years) - Book here

The castle ghost has hidden Princess Katarina Charlotta's necklace - help the maid/servant find it before the Count comes home! A fast-paced treasure hunt in and around the castle with clues, puzzles and the princess's bedroom as the goal. The activity takes place at the castle, gathering outside the gate50 SEK / person, max 1 adult / child.

11.00 - Storytelling with Hearsay

Historical fairy tales for the whole family. Based on historical sources and with laughter and humour in focus, Hörsägen's storytelling theatre will tell you about King Arthur, Robin Hood, Sigurd Fafnesbane, Thor and Odin, and many others, including stories you've never heard before. We meet on the lawn outside the stables. Free admission, no registration required.

11.30 - Singing games and ballads

The singing games we play today carry a heritage dating back to the Middle Ages. Join us and experience the Middle Ages by playing the oldest of the preserved singing games. We will also try ballad dancing with a ballad after Ingegierd Gunnarsdotter that was written down on Magnus Gabriel de la Gardie's initiative almost 400 years ago. Suitable for all ages. 12.00 - Theatre - A West Gothic thing 

Condottieri is holding a Västgötsk Ting. It revolves around the often absurd medieval laws of Västgötland, which allow a corrupt lawman to make it difficult for a group of knights to duel. It all gets out of hand... With stunts and comedy, Condottieri teaches us about the legal ways of the Middle Ages. Gather around the midsummer pole, free admission, no registration required.

13.30 - Lecture on the knight's weapons and equipment

Condottieri will present the many tools in a knight's armoury toolbox and why a medieval knight was expected to be an expert in all of them. The lecture will focus on the functions of the lance, the axe, the dagger and the sword and how a knight's armour protects the wearer. Open to all who have purchased admission to the castle grounds. Gathering in the main courtyard, free of charge for all those who have purchased admission to the castle grounds.

14.00 - Fencing school with Condottieri - Book here

The longsword is the basis of a knight's martial art. Condottieri teaches you the basics of how to handle the sword according to the instructions preserved from medieval sources. Meeting point Stora Borggården, 50 SEK per person, suitable for 9+ years, adults subject to availability).

14.00 - Lecture on the saints of Västergötland. 

Come and hear about the saints of Västergötland! Hörsägen tells the legends of saints directly from medieval Västergötland. Hear about Saint Sigfrid, who once Christianised the people of Västergötland, and baptised Olof Skötkonung in Husaby spring. What miracles actually took place around St Elin of Skövde? Is it true that Bishop Brynolf of Skara raised a man from the dead? The lecture takes place in the castle church, free of charge for everyone who has bought admission to the castle area.

15.00 - Castle guided tour - theme Medieval. 

Follow us into dark corners and behind closed doors. Discover the traces of the medieval castle of Läckö. Learn more about the Skara bishops who built Läckö and how they changed the place during their two hundred years as lords of the castle. Included in the entrance ticket.

15.00-18.00 - Try out medieval board games. 

Welcome to play board games from all over European history! There are games from antiquity, the Viking Age, the Middle Ages and everything in between. Come and try the Romans' favourite ludus latrunculorum, the Vikings' hnefatafl and daldos, the medieval alquerque and four-player chess. We'll teach you all the rules and tell you about the history of the games. Why not buy a coffee in the Stables and then challenge each other to a game over a cup of coffee? The tent next to Stallet, SEK 20 per game (swish with qr code).

17.00 - Scary Läckö - Book here

The maid/drake has escaped from work. Come and hide in the darkest rooms and secret passages of the castle. Hear about the people who never left the castle, even after they died. Who knows - you might meet one of them? The activity takes place at the castle, gathering outside the gate. 50 SEK / child (7+). No adults allowed.
